The Distilled Spirits Council commenting on a new report about alcohol screening and intervention released today by Centers for Disease Control Director Dr. Thomas R. Friedensaid:

“It is encouraging to see CDC promoting alcohol screening and interventions as a highly effective, evidence-based strategy,” said Dr. Samir Zakhari, Senior Vice President for Science at the Council, and a former top federal alcohol scientist.  “These are important tools to address abuse.”

Dr. Frieden noted that binge drinking rates among adults remain stable and that most people who drink do so without adverse health problems. It should also be noted that CDC data show record lows for binge drinking among 9th, 10th, 11thand 12thgraders.

Dr. Frieden pointed out the importance of understanding the definition of moderation.  For those who wish to learn more they can visit Drinkinmoderation.org, a website based on the Federal Dietary Guidelines.

Zakhari noted that over the past decade the Distilled Spirits Council has worked with health professional organizations to develop and compile evidence-based resources that health professionals can use in discussing alcohol with their patients. This “Alcohol Education Tool Kit” includes screening and brief intervention materials developed by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
