The Distilled Spirits Council, the national trade association representing producers and marketers of distilled spirits sold in the United States, today urged Governor Rick Scott to sign SB 106, legislation that would allow spirits sales in larger retail locations such as grocery stores and big-box retailers.

The legislation, known as the “Take Down the Wall” bill, levels the playing field for beer, wine and spirits by allowing all three to be sold in larger retail locations. Currently, retailers must segregate spirits into a side store separated by a wall, inconveniencing consumers.

“We urge Governor Scott to sign this legislation that advances the free market principles Florida is known for throughout the business community,” said Distilled Spirits Council Vice President Jay Hibbard. “Requiring retailers to segregate spirits into a separate store is outdated, discriminatory and unnecessary in a modern 21st Century marketplace. Providing the same access to beer, wine and spirits is a win for consumers and provides much needed shopping convenience.”

Florida would be the 28th state to allow the sale of spirits, wine and beer in larger retail locations such as grocery stores and big-box retailers.
