Washington, D.C. – The Distilled Spirits Council and the Gin and Vodka Association of Great Britain today announced a partnership to host a U.K. media tour, Sept. 29-Oct. 4, for US consumer journalists to explore the art, science and history of Gin, one of the world’s oldest and most popular spirit categories. The trip will include visits to historic distilleries and meetings with Master Distillers of the world’s most famous brands including Beefeater, Bombay Sapphire, Plymouth and Tanqueray. Participants will explore the category from its earliest history to the latest trends in botanicals and mixology. In addition to touring Beefeater’s historic London distillery, the trip also will include visits to the Bombay Sapphire exhibit at Vinopolis, a dinner at Diageo’s corporate headquarters with the Tanqueray team, and an excursion to Plymouth, to view England’s oldest Gin distillery, which was once the final lodgings of Pilgrim Fathers before they sailed to the New World (appropriate Martini toast on the docks included). Also in London, the group will attend the prestigious ceremonial dinner of the Worshipful Company of Distillers – a guild group founded in 1638 – at the Mansion House, the 264-year-old home of the Lord Mayor of the City of London and one of the grandest surviving Georgian town palaces in London. They will also view the 700-year-old Ceremony of the Keys, the traditional locking up of the Tower of London by night. Due to favorable group arrangements with airline and hotels, there is a very low cost for the trip package, and full media stipends are available. The trip is the latest in a series of Council-hosted spirits category tours that allow journalists to explore the heritage and style of sophisticated adult beverages. Other tours include an annual visit to the Bourbon Trail of Kentucky, and a bi-annual Scotch Trip in conjunction with the Scotch Whisky Association. “This is a tremendous opportunity for journalists to experience the sophisticated history and style of the Gin category, in a truly elegant and educational manner,” said Distilled Spirits Council senior vice president Frank Coleman.
