Mississippi is one of only six states that still prohibits the retail sale of spirits on Sundays
Today, the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) applauded the Mississippi House for passing HB 92, a bill to allow seven-day spirits sales in the state. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
“Seven-day spirits sales give adult consumers increased convenience and the freedom to choose when to buy their favorite spirits products just like they already do for beer and wine,” said Corey Staniscia, DISCUS vice president of state government relations. “There are only six states still banning the retail sale of spirits on Sundays, and we applaud legislators for working to remove this outdated prohibition in Mississippi. We encourage the Senate to pass HB 92 in support of Mississippi consumers.”
Across the country, states have modernized their marketplace regarding alcohol sales laws, and since 2002, 22 states have passed laws permitting Sunday sales year-round. Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Utah are the only remaining states that prohibit seven-day spirits sales.
HB 92 authorizes local liquor retail stores to sell distilled spirits on Sundays if they choose to do so. Allowing seven-day spirits sales in Mississippi could increase ABC sales by between $16.1 million and $24.2 million annually. These increased sales would translate into additional revenues for Mississippi.
