Thomas Soltau

Thomas Soltau, MD best describes himself as a “lifetime learner.” After receiving a degree in microbiology from the Georgia Institute of Technology, he was introduced to fine single malt whisky by one of his medical school professors (thanks Dr Barrett!).  While training in Augusta, GA and then Birmingham, AL he developed a love for fine wine and spirits.

Thomas’s training included numerous hours working in biological and biochemical research labs.  This was punctuated with trips to some of his favorite alcohol destinations.  After years of preparation, including bugging numerous distillers and winemakers (thank you all), he founded Sugarfield Spirits with his brother Andrew in 2018.  Thomas currently serves as the head distiller and blender.  His wife Angie works alongside him in production.  Sugarfield Spirits, located in Gonzales, LA, produces numerous expressions of rum and whiskey as well as locally sourced fruit liqueurs. Thomas has been a member of the Louisiana State Distillers Guild since 2018, a board member since 2020, and currently serves as the treasurer.  In addition to running the distillery, he continues to practice as a Neonatologist (newborn intensive care) in Lafayette, LA.
