Distilled Spirits Council Vice President of State Government Relations David Wojnar released the following statement on West Virginia Governor Jim Justice approving HB 4524, legislation to allow spirits sales across the entire state:

“This is a huge win for the spirits industry, especially in light of current circumstances surrounding COVID-19. Eliminating antiquated laws like this one will go a long way in helping West Virginia’s hospitality and tourism industry get back on its feet. We are grateful to the governor and legislature for working to support businesses especially during these challenging times.”

Background:

Under the new law, sales of distilled spirits will be permitted across the state beginning on July 1, 2020. The law requires localities to opt-out of selling spirits rather than forcing dry counties to opt-in. A similar measure was signed into law last year in Virginia.
